A number of water sports would be making their debut when the 2016 edition of the 2016 Army Sports week slated for Abuja between October 10 and 15, 2016.

The event which will be in conjunction with a sports consultancy outfit, Twin Huts Concept Ltd. and foremost yachting club in Nigeria, the Navy Sailing Club, will provide logistics and training during the games, in a bid to ensure the success of the event.

The chairman of the organising committee, Major General Hassan Umaru, said the recent development was worth celebrating, as this is the first time sailing would be part of the Nigeria Army Sports week since inception.

Umaru, who doubles as the chief of training and operation, thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Y. Buratai, for this innovative idea and his sterling leadership qualities in moving the Nigerian army forward.

He promised to make the occasion a grand event, as he called on residents of Abuja and its environs to come grace the occasion taking place at the Jabi Lake, Abuja.

According to the immediate club commodore of the Navy Sailing Club and chief executive officer of Twin Huts Concept Limited, Tunde Giwa-Daramola, the sports week would see officers of the Nigerian Army being trained in sailing, kayaking, rescue operations and medical evacuation in case of mishaps and general safety precautions.

The grand finale of the sailing event is slated for October 14 at 14:00hrs, with Buratai expected to be the special guest of honour.
