The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Command, Mr. Abubakar Marafa, has warned police officers in the country against road block.
He stated that since the policy on road block has not changed, any officer found to be indulged in practice that violates fundamental human rights would not be tolerated.
The AIG said this in Uyo while addressing officers and men of the state police command at Ikot Akpan Abia.
He cautioned policemen against violation of human rights while carrying out their duties to avoid conflict between the police and members of the public.
According to him, if the police officers respect human rights, the development would aid them perform their duties better as members of the public would give them maximum cooperation.
He said: “Road block has been banned, respect the fundamental human rights of Nigerians. We’ve received series of reports about this. Respect the right of Nigerians: this will trigger cooperation between the police and the society.
“As a policeman or officer, you must be civil to the members of public. Incivility occurs when addressing members of the public, like ‘you bloody civilians.’ Remember you were a civilian before you became a policeman. You have to prove to the people that the police are their friends.”
Marafa, who described Akwa Ibom State as one of the least crime states, commended men and officers of the command for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining adequate security in the state.
He, however, advised officers against misuse of firearms, stressing that rifles should only be used by officers when under attack.
He said: “I want you to keep up the spirit of maintaining peace and security in the state because Akwa Ibom is one of the states with low crime rate.
“Police officers are not allowed to use their firearms as they desire unless when under attack.
“Do not play with arms. Do not use arms unnecessarily.”
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Murtala Mani, asked the AIG to deploy more man personnel into the state.
He added that the main aim of the command is to ensure adequate security in the state.
He noted that the state police command has been able to outsmart criminals in Akwa Ibom where oil exploration has posed challenges to security outfits.
