Worried by the renewed hostilities in the troubled Niger Delta, the President General of Ibibio youth Council (IYC) Mr. Imoh Okoko has appealed to all militants operating in the region to lay down their arms in the interest of the country.
Okoko, who made the appeal yesterday in Uyo during an interview with LEADERSHIP, said the continuous bombing of oil and gas pipelines had created economic setback and environmental degradation for the people and therefore should stop forthwith.
“I am calling on all armed youths in the region to lay down their arms trusting that the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari will attend to the needs of the Niger Delta People,”Okoko said.
He commended the recent Niger Delta Peace and Development Initiative organized by stakeholders from the region, including the Minister of state for Petroleum Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu for doing a good job to end the hostilities.
Okoko urged them to continue and urged people from the region to support and contribute to the success of the initiative.
He reiterated the readiness of Ibibio youths to partner the Federal Government and other concerned organizations to help restore lasting peace to the Niger Delta.
The foremost Ibibio youth leader said he was happy that the Niger Delta Avengers NDA and other splinter groups are ready to dialogue with the Federal Government on how to end the crisis in the region.
The development he noted was imperative for the entire Niger Delta Region unite and speak with one voice under a single umbrella on the Niger Delta questions with the Federal Government.
