Senate Seeks Adequate Funding Of Agriculture Sector

The Senate has decried the poor funding of agencies and parastatals in the ministry of agriculture and development, describing the development  as dangerous for the  sustainace of economic growth and food security of  the nation.

The senate therefore called on the federal government to adequately release funds for the agencies to deliver on their mandate .

The senate also stated this when its committee on agriculture and rural development went on oversight function of  parastatals and agencies in the ministry to  asses the level of compliance of the 2015 budget.

Addressing journalists after the tour of the agencies, chairman, senate committee on agriculture and development, Senator Adamu Abdullahi  said the tour was in line with its constitutional mandate to oversight agencies and see whether they have substantially complied with the implementation of appropriation Act of 2015.

Senator Abdulahi, a former governor who represent Nasarawa West in the National Assembly said an amendment  bill to re position the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) and the National Agricultural seed council (NASC) has scaled through first reading and awaiting second reading in the senate.

The lawmaker who  noted the importance of agriculture in boosting the nation’s economy said the bills if passed into law will boost the activities of the councils in achieving the mandate in line with the change agenda of the federal government.
